HYPERFLY was the 1st Production NOTAR.
Dave, the inventor of the first ever No Tail Rotor Helicopter (even before Hughes a/c) gives an in depth description of another step in flying history. The Hyperfly was invented by Dave to allow RC airplane pilots to fly helicopters and feel comfortable with them. It also was a STOL aircraft that could be used as a Military UAV Surveillance vehicle. It could be catapulted off the carriers and caught with arresting cables.
It was one of the biggest selling models of all time. It is on display at the AMA "History of Model Aviation display at the San Diego Aerospace museum.
Hope you enjoy this bit of history and thanks for watching.

I'm going to try …
I'm going to try the pie plate with my Blade CP because everthing that could go wrong with that tail rotor has.So all I have to do is put the pie plate on and add wheels! Whoa.
I remeber these …
I remeber these things. I wanted one sooooo bad.
Thanks very kindly. …
Thanks very kindly. Glad you had some fun with it.
Its a pleasure to …
Its a pleasure to see this fly again, i still have the mechanics in the loft for the past 8 years but no longer have the shell or tail boom, such a shame not being able to find the parts….still a great invention.. thankyou for the long summer nights
Thanks kindly.
Thanks kindly.
Very simple idea, …
Very simple idea, great guy to think of it! Love it!
No longer in …
No longer in production with the advent of the ETRM.
Thanks. Wish it …
Thanks. Wish it had worked for you.
that is a really …
that is a really cool rc helicopter…where can i get one?
It must not have …
It must not have been set up right. As you see from my other vids on this machine, you have to toss it, forward and then use the right stick to keep if flying without hitting the ground. Like all models, it takes a bit of a learning curve and they all break when crashed. Sorry yours is broken.
ive flew quite a …
ive flew quite a few planes before the hyperfly and it was the first heli that i had bought, in my understanding it flys just like planes do
when i got mine it didnt lift it just dived to the ground
the model shop where i bought it said the battery was faulty and was shorting out
anyhoo they refused me a refund as the prop head had broke due to impact on my last attempt to fly it
they did however replace the battery
Sorry for your …
Sorry for your problems. There are lots of models that are beyond the flyers skills and they get broke. It takes skill and practice to fly anything. Most crash, get discouraged, and then blame the machine. Ha ha. That is with all models too. Thanks for the kudos.
i bough the …

i bough the hyperfly i think when i was about 17
sadly it never flew
after saving all my money for 6 months to buy one and it didnt work
i found out later it was the battery it was failing to provide the power to the motor
but the copter was broke before i figured that out with so many attempts to hand launch it
it was a great looking thing even today
just sad it never worked for me
oh great job in designing that
it was a sweet copter
wow you're actually …
wow you're actually online. you've got mail!
Thats easy, because …
Thats easy, because the HB has a throttle. YOu slow down and land and there is NO tail rotor torque. When I break mine, I will do that, in the mean time, you have to settle with the Hummingbird in this video. It is almost the same as the HB. See my other video to see it.
grab a fixed pitch …
grab a fixed pitch honeybee and dish the tail, put a huge party plate behind let's see how it flies!
I just picked one …
I just picked one up of ebay for $112 shipped.
I just got it today and built it.
It was all beat up, but it included all new part s needed to fix it. It's almost brand new now!
I have a thread about it on rchelimag dot com
sending you a message
They went out of …
They went out of production quite a few years ago, when the electric tail rotor motored helis came on the scene. I know of nowhere to get one, however you can modify any of the newer ETRM versions, if you break the tail.
I'd like to have …
I'd like to have one of those. I tried to search kyosho Hyperfly on ebay and amazon, still couldn't find one. Do you know where can I buy the heli?
yeah but who wants …
yeah but who wants to just hover around every minute anyways, i have a lama and until i got it modified by lengthing the inner rod it could not fly outside and gets quite boring just hovering inside, now its a blast, i wouldnt mind one of these at all for when i dont want to bring ut my expensive Belt CP.
Thanks. It was …
Thanks. It was really made for foward flight only so to bypass that hovering learning curve that usually disuades people after a few crashes. This was a blast, but like anything else, lots of people could not understand how to fly it with a Mode I radio they came with in the combo. That was a bad move in Mode II USA, but good in Europe, where they fly
Mode I.
Thanks. Remember …
Thanks. Remember it will do better with a 3 channel radio, left and right, fore and afte cyclic on the right stick.
YOu must launch it into forward flight, and keep the nose in the wind. Land it only like an airplane. They are much better with speed control radios, cause when you slow the motor, the torque goes away too. Good luck.
Unbelievable, i …
Unbelievable, i have been into r/c heli's for a while and never saw this… Very nice, are they still available, im sure the Co-Axial guys would love one as they are stuck indoors LOL.
I bought a hyperfly …
I bought a hyperfly apache years ago, when i was 10, i built it all but i never sprayed it and it stopped there and just this week i started workin on it again, im now 22, ill put up a vid hopefully if i can manage to fly it, i always wondered how it would fly with no rotor. Like everything it seems so simple but it takes a genius to realize it first
That is right, just …
That is right, just stall it and it will spin…UNLESS the wind is blowing at least 5 knots. Then it will not spin no matter what.
It will simply hover nicely and settle to the ground, as the battery runs low.
