Cox .010 powered LA Stick RC plane pics and vids

This is a scratchbuilt RC plane built from plans. Made of balsa wood and covered with Coverite Microlite film. Has a lightweight Berg radio receiver and Hitec micro servos controlling rudder and elevator. Engine is a Cox .010, the smallest engine ever mass produced. I recently purchased this engine which was made in the 60s and refurbished it for flying service. Very fascinating engine, not many people fly them anymore. Mostly sought after by collectors who hoard them up uselessly instead of putting them into the air as they were intended. Run time is about 1.5 minutes on 2cc of 25% nitro glow fuel. Most folks have never seen one of these engines run, much less fly!

Where are you …
Where are you finding plans. I am starting into small electrics. I have found many small motors that would replace .010 engines very nicely. I just need to find plans for stick built planes. Or just balsa plank built.

Thanks. The .010s …
Thanks. The .010s are a blast. I recently broke in another one for a new scratchbuilt plane that's almost ready to fly.

I'm surprised that …
I'm surprised that little engine can pull that plane, but it was doing a good job, my dad has one, but I've never seen it run but since they don't make them any more I don't think I ever will.
nice little plane, keep up the good work and thanks for the vid.

First of all, it is …
First of all, it is a two-stroke. Secondly, the piston is less than 6mm in diameter. Third, to turbocharge an engine you need pressure, not some silly little fan blowing on the intake. Try again!

TeeBeeZee @ 6:02 am

I have no knowledge …
I have no knowledge of that ever being done. I seem to have a full time hobby just keeping them running decently enough normally aspirated to fly my models.

alex681219 @ 6:02 am

Have you know if …
Have you know if some one has turbocharged this engines?for example blowing air with a litle dc motor fan into the snorkel…I want to blow some hidrogen via air intake and see if the temperature of the head goes down… THE H2 can be produced mixing aluminum and caustic soda(very cheap) Hibrid Engine ;)

TeeBeeZee @ 6:02 am

The Sure Start .049 …
The Sure Start .049 is much more common and larger than the TD .010. Cox still sells the SS .049s on their website for $6.99. A bargain at that price.

alex681219 @ 6:02 am

I want a cox sure …
I want a cox sure start .49 but i dont know if this engine is bigger or smaller, can some body tell me?

TeeBeeZee @ 6:02 am

Thanks. I'm …
Thanks. I'm building another .010-powered plane right now. It's a low-winger that's lighter and should be faster.

labreck12 @ 6:02 am

that's a beautiful …
that's a beautiful plane. nice work.

Noone's getting too …
Noone's getting too anal here. It's all fun. I agree about the shrinking availability of full kits. Though I'm guilty of owning a couple of ARFs, I do enjoy building planes the old fashioned way. There's more satisfaction in flying those models, for sure. My next build will be an Ultra Sport 60.

carnooba @ 6:02 am

Or maybe I'm …
Or maybe I'm finally turning into an old fart.

Somebody makes a throttle for these,, or used to.

carnooba @ 6:02 am

You're right, sorry …
You're right, sorry.

I suppose I'm getting a little sensitive when I see guys come out to the field with an absolutely impeccable Yak and then talk about how they "built" it in a week.

What they did, in fact, was ASSEMBLE a fully built aircraft, built by factory workers in China making a dollar a day.

The result is that those of us who still enjoy building, are offered fewer and fewer, true and proper kits that actually need to be built.

I guess that can make a guy anal.

carnooba @ 6:02 am

TBZ,

I'm …
TBZ,

I'm familiar with those names. Been a modeller for 45 years. Along with Ken Willard and Randy Randolph, they are my heroes.

Taking a design and adding your own touches shows a creative spirit that seems to be fading those days. I commend you for your effort and appreciate your sharing it with us.

gertnood @ 6:02 am

In the model …
In the model aircraft world people know what these terms mean:

"scratch built" = built from plans and raw materials versus a kit

"kit built" = built from a kit

"Not to get picky"? - totally anal and unnecessary is more like it.

adelucar @ 6:02 am

Cool plane, where …
Cool plane, where did you get the plans for it?

TeeBeeZee @ 6:02 am

I guess I stand …
I guess I stand corrected. It's a combination of ideas from the original Littlest Stick designed by Fred Reese, then later modified by Gene Rock and Dave Fritzke, then other mods by myself. It was just easier to say it was scratchbuilt since I cut all the pieces from "scratch" myself. One thing's for sure: You can't please everyone.

carnooba @ 6:02 am

not to get picky …
not to get picky but built from someone else's plans is not scratch built. The person who, from a clean sheet of paper, designed the plane "from scratch" and then built it, is the one who built it from scratch.

A commendable achievement, building this small plane, but you didn't build it from scratch. The original designer did.

Can you let us know who that original designer was? He should get some credit for this, I think.

barrysteenmans @ 6:02 am

I have also that …
I have also that motor & it runs great with 40% nitro.

trexflyr @ 6:02 am

Is there anyway you …
Is there anyway you could send me the plans to the model you built? I loved the plane and i am thinking of trying to build something like that on my own to fly. But, i don't know where to get a kit or plans to scratch build one myself. Do you think you could find a website or a link to where i can get a kit or plans for one? I am very interested in the idea of a realy small rc plane like yours!

TeeBeeZee @ 6:02 am

No kit available …
No kit available that I know of. This one was built from plans I found online. There is a provision for ailerons if that is the way you want it but you must be careful to keep the weight down and the engine won't run inverted with the stock tank so I didn't bother.

trexflyr @ 6:02 am

Is there a kit with …
Is there a kit with movable aileroins of this size as well?

trexflyr @ 6:02 am

Do you know where i …
Do you know where i can accuire a kit of the same or simmilar plane in which you where flying? I would love to build and fly one of my very own!!!

trexflyr @ 6:02 am

So cool!
So cool!

TeeBeeZee @ 6:02 am

Not interested in …
Not interested in selling. You should build one. It's not too difficult and the challenge of building/flying is very rewarding.
