How to break in a Nitro RC engine Part 10: Tuning
This vid will show you how to tune your nitro engine on the LSN, HSN, MSN and other methods. Not sure if it is a idle or lean issue? We will help you!
This video will show you the theory on how to turn. The counter clock wise (CCW) and clock wise (CW) movements of the hsn (high speed needle) and low speed needle (LSN) and how they affect the kits speed and power over all. This will show you the theory of fine tuning either from the amount of smoke out of the pipe to increased speed an the amount of power off the starting line. The next video will show you the actual tuning of the engines over theory.
This video is on my break in method. I use half of the new school break in method and half of the traxxas. My method goes like this:
tank 1: 1/4 throttle, leaned to 200 degrees, no full brakes and really no time limits on the throttle ever to keep it moving like the new school method.
Tank 2 and 3 are half throttle tanks. Same as above. You can tune the engine a little more if you would like. Dont fully tune though as you want to keep it a little bit rich.
Tanks 4 and 5 are full throttle. Again with the above, tune a little more if you want. I have mine so that it is in ball part by the time that the last tank is done. Keep the truck moving like the new school method.
This vid is on the new school break in method. The nice part about this method is that heat is good and it is the focus of the break in. Once you achieve a constant 200 degrees F then you finish that tank and move on to the next method. For the first cycle you run for 3 minutes and then check the engine temp. If you are at 200 degrees then move on. If not, lean it to gain more heat or richen it to lessen heat. Cool the engine at bottom dead center BDC and then start the engine back up. Run the engine for another 3 minutes and then see where the temp is.
You will repeat this till you are constantly at 200 degrees.
When you are then you will do 4 minutes till with half throttle variances. If you are maintaining 200 degrees then move on. If not, then richen or lean as you need to.
On the last leg, you will run for 5 minute intervals at full throttle. Maintaining 200 degrees will allow you to graduate to a broken in engine.
This video is on how to select fuel and glow plugs prior to break in. Information that this contains his how to troubleshoot and break in the kit based off of the glow plug, how much oil is good in fuel, and what nitro percent is good for the fuel.
This is a ten video rc nitro break in series. The series is designed on how to guide the novice to experienced racing pro or basher on how to break in a nitro rc properly. I will teach the traxxas, new school, and my own method which is a combination of the other two. I will show the user how to prime a nitro rc engine, start the engine using a bump start box, ex starter, roto start, pull start and tiger drive devices. Then, after break in, I will go over nitro engine tuning theory and then show the tuning actally done. Did you store it …
Did you store it properly? I have some old fuel that I am trying to use up (about 2 years as well) and things are fine. You want to keep it in the dark, on a cool surface, and air tight.
Otherwise, like with gasoline, it will loose its octane rating (sort of speak for gas if you will).
if the fuel is old …
if the fuel is old like 2 years old does it reduce the performance of your engine because mine is old and my car isnt working too well
when my idle is in …
when my idle is in the correct position, like yours was when you first started it… it will start to kick and move by itself… then i have to turn the idle down a little and when i do that i do it too much it seams like.. and it shuts off. does that mean that the idle is too high or does that mean somethin else?
Thank you!
Thank you!
squerril, you are a …
squerril, you are a mad dude. your vids have helped me understand alot more about nitro engines (and cars), so cheers.
keep up the good work!!!!!!!
Thank you! Good to …
Thank you! Good to see that they help out! =)
Thanks for the …
Thanks for the videos! They are really good! Helped me alot!
Do I leave my …
Do I leave my lighter on the glow plug that long normally… no.
Do I do it on videos because I am explaining something, yes.
umm might where out …
umm might where out your glow plug keeping it in the engine that long?
I have the stock …
I have the stock wheels and I do think that I need a clutch bell with more teeth because I revs way to fast and high. There is plenty of air because I use an integy air filter and usually run it without the body and there is no binding
I new to nitro so i think this might be a big problem is that the rubber on the slide part has hole from where the flywheel has kind of messed it up so is this the problem
If you have plenty …
If you have plenty of smoke, the LSN is tuned right, and the idle is set then look for air leaks (I have a vid up of that and how to seal them as well). If all of that checks out (and I would seal it regardless) then the engine is more than likely fine assuming that you are not geared tall, no binding in the drive line or resistance, plenty of air flow in the body, and the wheels are not too big.
If that is the case then you could consider a better cooling head.
I have a sportwerks …
I have a sportwerks chaos and I just am not good at tunning.First of all is that I cannot get it to idle without creeping and if I try to lower the idle it shuts off.Second of all I feel like I'm running rich but it gets to the 290's
I also have had a few minor runaways the first one is when my signal went out and I ran strait into my garage door after I fix that problem the batteries died and I ran full throttle into my dads truck.I'm getting a failsafe before I run it again
Failsafes are 15 to …
Failsafes are 15 to 20 dollars.
Are they needed? I had a runaway in Oregon that took the kit through oncoming and offgoing traffic. My CRT Pro kit could have been smashed! Also, as it went on, the airfilter came off, rocks got in the engine, and that is what stopped the kit. I eventually found the kit. Only major damage was the engine.
The failsafes that I had did not work with my Futaba HRS system. Had I ditched the $300 system and used a failsafe then $20 would have saved me $200 for a engin
As an engine ages …
As an engine ages from use it is normal to have a brown mark at the top of the piston (this is where the explosion takes place) and for everything internally to start to turn that way.
As long as it is not lean then you are not cooking it. Also, as long as you have compression then it is fine.
My friend just …
My friend just baught a traxxas revo, after about a month of having it he had scorched his piston, i have a traxxas jato and i have just scorched mine is scorcing the piiston a really bad thing, if so can you tell me what i have to do to fix it.
thnks muck Mrme_11
how much is a good …
how much is a good failsafe?? and is it really needed for the car??
mmmmhmmmm.lol
mmmmhmmmm.lol
de nada mi amigo!

will do, and once …
will do, and once again thanks =)
No worries on the …
No worries on the questions! I am very used to it and understand that people want to be sure and that is why they ask alot of questions.
I have never owned a Imex but I have heard that they are the ones with a speaker that will go off when the failsafe is activated.
But, a failsafe is a failsafe. Ive used a ton of different ones and only one I have seen not work with Futaba HRS and another that did not retain memory. All you can do is try it
lol dude im so …
lol dude im so sorry for all the q's but have you heard of that brand?
Im sure it will be …
Im sure it will be fine.
ok thanks, but if …
ok thanks, but if you answered the following question in another vid that i asked please disregard this, but i went and bought an IMEX failsafe and it doesnt say about GHZ so i dont know if it will work and my truck comes in tomorrow so what do you think?
Some yes, some no. …
Some yes, some no. Usually the answer is yes but it would be a good idea to program it, verify that it works, take the batteries out of the kit for 10 seconds, re-install the batts and then check it again. If it stored it into memory then you will know for your failsafes.
Also, the 2.4Ghz failsafes I have seen not store into memory and only protect against range issues and not battery power. Those you will want a second failsafe as well
so i just bought a …
so i just bought a fail safe and i want to know if i have to set the safe before every time i ride?
