Tanaka 26CC CONVERSION ON GAS/METHANOL
Here we have the Tanaka, stock, ignition conversion being tested with a selection of props and fuel mixes.
The normal prop for a 26cc, I'm told is an 18 X 6 but in this case, we are illustrating this engine swinging a 20 X 8 Zinger wood.
Top end is 5400 RPM and idle is a steady, 1700.
It was getting dark so the tach was bouncing around but finally settled down to give us readings.
Idle is all day with good transition. Cracking the throttle open produces a lean hesitation for a split second but the engine never stumbles and catches for a strong response.
Note that we are using a stock, RC engine carburetor. The original that came with this engine had both high and low needles that were non adjustable. This carb is from an OS .108 with the barrel just slightly larger than the Walbro that came with the engine.
The fuel on this run was a 50/50 mix of 91 octane gas and methanol. Oil was Klotz Benol (castor) at a mix of 30:1
Testing on several props reveals that the engine idles and transitions best on the blend rather than an all gas or all methanol mix.
The interesting thing is that the needle needs to be out 1/4 turn on gas and 1/2 turn on methanol. This is to be expected but the blend actually puts our needle back to the gas setting.

Just a safety tip:

Just a safety tip:
I wouldn't stand in front of the prop like that in case it comes loose or your prop fails etc.
If it comes off it will fly off to the right, right toward you.
I went wiht the oil …
I went wiht the oil as I did here, just because it was a new engine, it was quite cold and as I didn't have a lot of experience with gassers, I didn't want to make a mistake.
I do plan to run 100:1 though, eventually.
Try full synthetic …
Try full synthetic at 100:1 and you'll never go back.
The AMA is for old …
The AMA is for old folks and agnostics. A monopolistic company. Never join a gas club they will deny use of the runway for an electric.
Castor oil does not …
Castor oil does not burn, i found that out the hard way, on my hands. but no it just goes out the exhaust and collects on anything in its way.
30:1 is too rich …
30:1 is too rich for Tanaka motors. Also Castor will leave too much carbon build up especially in these small motors. I run 45:1 on my 47cc Tanaka and it's running strong 3-4 years in a roll
