HobbyZone FireBird Outlaw: 29 Flights, 29 Crash Landings

The Firebird Outlaw was a short-lived beginner's RC plane from HobbyZone. It's no longer in manufacture today. Unlike the HobbyZone planes available today, the Firebird Outlaw has no movable ailerons, elevators or rudder. It has 2 propellers — one under each wing. To turn left, you activate the right propeller. To turn right, you activate the left propeller. When the throttle is applied, both propellers are active. The irony with beginner planes is that they tend to be very difficult to control due to their simplicity. In the case of the Firebird Outlaw, it's nearly impossible to land cleanly, unless you happen to get lucky. I've flown this thing nearly 30 times and crash land it every time. These planes are extremely durable though and will take a severe beating. You can still find them available on eBay.

Agreed. Labelling …
Agreed. Labelling them "crash" landings may have been a little over dramatic.

Not too shabby. …
Not too shabby. I'd call those crash landings just rough landings.

Thank's I buyin' it …
Thank's I buyin' it, the Aerobird 3 should be good. I already have an Air Hogs plane and my little cousin flies it well. I'll probably buy it in spring. -20 degree weather and 40 mph wind is not great for flying i'll try to post a video!

The aerobird 3 is a …
The aerobird 3 is a pretty good plane to learn with. It has simple controls. It doesn't fly too fast, and it's very forgiving about drastic movement on the stick, which you'll have a lot of with a 6 year old. A lot of the hobbyzone planes have these characteristics which make them good planes for first time flyers. For a 6 year old, you might also consider some of the simple "Air Hog" planes you can get Target, Walmart and Toys R Us. I've flown a couple of those with my 5 year old daughter.

The thing is i'm always worried about crashing so I wan't to fly something easy-er and that I can use to teach my little cousin(he is 6 yrs. old) i'm thinking of the aerobird 3. Whats your opinion???

If you want to try …
If you want to try something different, you might want to consider getting a 3D plane. Parkzone has a new one called Typhoon 2 3D.

I recommend the …
I recommend the ParkZone Stryker F-27C.

These planes are great fun, very easy to fly and you can land them too if your lucky enough to have an astro turf cricket strip on your field!

And yet another thing I wanna know what was the most tragic firebird outlaw tragedy???

unluckyday94 @ 12:00 am

SCJohnson77 Don't …
SCJohnson77 Don't say I'm a bad pilot!!! the engineers should have put a tad more power because when it crashed into the tree it did'nt fly into the tree, it literally backed into the tree by a tiny wind gust!!!

Well i'm better now …
Well i'm better now!
Now I have an interest in RC heli's
I have an E-flite Blade CP.
I just wish I had the CP instead.
P.S. It turns out, the hospital bill was paid by Aflac for $1100 of it but still I lost a great summer!

SCJohnson77 @ 12:00 am

this is a great …
this is a great plane. you are just a horrible pilot. get over it. dont blame the engineers who have ten time sthe brains as you you stupied liberl.

Schlermie @ 12:00 am

Ouch! That's the …
Ouch! That's the second most tragic Firebird Outlaw story I've ever heard.

unluckyday94 @ 12:00 am

I hate those piles …
I hate those piles of SH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long story short, I ended my last flight with 1 broken plane, 1 pelvis broken in two places, and a $1200 hospital bill! I should have just got a new friggin plane! With $1200 I could have bought 24 of those.
P.S. Nice Vid.

Schlermie @ 12:00 am

I'll bet you're …
I'll bet you're right. If the new battery doesn't solve the problem, you might have a resistive short in the plane somewhere that quickly drains the battery.

appletoeat123 @ 12:00 am

cheers i may try a …
cheers i may try a new battery becuase when the battery normal runs out you still have left and right so that you can glide it in if you are at a high altitude

Schlermie @ 12:00 am

That's really odd. …
That's really odd. I can't even understand how that could possibly happen. Since the throttle is essentially just the combination of your right and left propellers, then if left/right works, I would expect throttle to work too. You might be able to fly it by alternating between left and right propellers to make some forward motion. It sounds like you need a new controller or new plane though.

appletoeat123 @ 12:00 am

i have a firebird …
i have a firebird outlaw and ive tryed several times to fly but i throw it in the air start to gain height and then afer around 30 secs it has no throttle just left and right propellors. and yes the battery was fully charged. Any suggestions? thanks

Schlermie @ 12:00 am

Thanks. I had to …
Thanks. I had to laugh at it myself when I was putting this together. Sinatra must be spinning in his grave.
