Make a 12 VDC power supply for RC LiPo Battery Chargers.

Model airplanes and Helicopters come with battery chargers that usually need to be charged off a 12 vdc power supply. They are rather expensive, so the manufacturers do not include them with your models. So if you want to charge your heli and plane batteries in the house instead of in your car, try making your own supply, as I demonstrate here. Thanks to one of my Subscribers, Bryan, (bjudoka1) for putting the idea in my head.
I was thinking that you could also run a wire right out of your home pc and use it at the same time.

They all should run …
They all should run fine on it. There is a heck of a lot more amps and watts in a 12v car battery than that PSU, so not to worry.

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

Thanks. No …
Thanks. No difference. The charger controls it.

vibusta @ 12:00 am

Thanks! I know you …
Thanks! I know you use the PSU to power the charger. I was wondering what part does the wattage on a power supply play in all of this. I've found a 300 W PSU with output of 15 amps in the 12 V wire. How many chargers can I safely run from this one? For now I have a NiMH charger but I would like to get a LiPo soon and possibly use both at the same time. Thanks again, I appreciate the advice.

Any 1 to 2 Amp Mah …
Any 1 to 2 Amp Mah PSU will run any charger. It is the charger you are trying to power with this. The PSU is not to be used to directly charge the batteries so the batteries you can charge depend on the kind of charger you have. My Triton charges Lips, Nicds, Nimh, and PB batteries.

Great vid …
Great vid Nightflyyer! I was wondering what kind of wattage for the PSU was needed. Would it differ if recharging NiMH cells?

Yes, the smaller …
Yes, the smaller amperage just means it will take longer to charge, like a trickle charger, but it still will charge. Amps is like pressure pushing the current into the Battery "tank" If it is only 500 mah, then it takes 1 hour to fill the battery with 500 mah. If it is a 7 amp charger, it will take 1 hour to put 7 amps in your 8 amp battery and a little longer to fill it to the full 8 amps, but it will still work.

I am not bashing …
I am not bashing Electrics at all. I have and still have some of the biggest nitro engined airplanes around, including jets. But Noise gets the neighbors mad.

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

Yes, the other …
Yes, the other chargers have balancing circuits. You do not need to balance the batteries every flight, as they only need that every 10 cycles or so. I connect my Triton directly to the Lipo motor leads to charge. If I want to balance, I use the charger it came with, which drains each cell til they are equal in voltage, then it starts charging. This takes about 20 extra minutes to charge them. Good luck and thanks.

It's a lipo charger …
It's a lipo charger? I have the exact same triton charger (not the 2). however, i didn't think it would charge polys simply because it charges ions, and they require a different charging setup right?? anyways this is a great idea. i've got a couple PC PSU's lying around…can't beleive i forgot about them for this. sick of using the 12v batteries and then charging them!

Thrashaero @ 12:00 am

and nitros require …
and nitros require a much more expensive motor, tuning it, a starter, noisy, smoky, cleaning after flying and of course spent fuel you don't get back. also if you're just bashing electrics in general, you have to consider the new a123 batteries are li-ions that can be charged in 15 minutes and do not explode, known for their durability and life span. now when those get more into the r/c market, watch out mate.

I have a 13.8 v, 7amps computer power supply - My question is, will 7amps be sufficient enough to use with Thunder Power TP-610C charger and provide good charging for MaxAmps Lipo 8000HV 2S2P 7.4V Pack? Please help me understand the Power Supply Amperage requirement for changing.

Thank you!

Thanks kindly and good luck with your project.

great vid as usual …
great vid as usual dave, i have a spare pc power supply that ive been thinking about modding for a while now and you just made it a whole lot easier. keep up the great work.

It should work. …
It should work. Where did you get it? Check if any fuses inside have blown.

FloydsterUtube @ 12:00 am

I didn't test with …
I didn't test with a jumper since I don't have one. I just soldered the only green wire to a black wire.

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

Well mine is an atx …
Well mine is an atx in the video. Are you sure you have the jumper in the right place? It needs to be in, even if you have a power switch. They all work the same, so maybe there is a problem with it. Is it new?

FloydsterUtube @ 12:00 am

I tried this with …
I tried this with an ATX PS and the fan starts to turn and quickly shuts off and no power to any rails? Any ideas?

I soldered the Green to a ground.

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

PS, The plug I show …
PS, The plug I show in the movie is an ATX plug. They only come on atx supplies.

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

It's the same power …
It's the same power output, and if you watch the video, you may see you don't need the jumper on the ATX plug with newer atx power supply, because the better ones have their own on off switch.

FloydsterUtube @ 12:00 am

Are you …
Are you demonstrating with an AT or ATX supply? If AT then how would I modify your instruction for an ATX power supply?

petes98 @ 12:00 am

i bought mine from …
i bought mine from ebay (to my knowledge i was supposed to get the connectors and it didn't, but oh well i got a good deal on it) thanks for all of your help again

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

I thought you said …
I thought you said it came with it. Mine Triton 1 will not balance cells, so, I just use the red and black wires. If the Triton 2 doesn't have lipo balancing capability, you will have to use red and black too, and forget the multiple wires on the battery and connect to the main line.

petes98 @ 12:00 am

where do i get the …
where do i get the connector for the multiple wire to the triton (or triton2) charger?

NightFlyyer @ 12:00 am

It will work, but …
It will work, but make sure it is set for Lipo and no higher than the rating of the batteries mah. You can use either, but the multiple wire connector discharges the batteries first slightly til they are all the same voltage, (balancing) then begins charging, which always takes longer that way, but is the safest.
