RC plane Flight 3 (Bumpy landing) on/board GPS

This is the 3rd flight with my new tower trainer rc plane. I set a new speed record at 125 MPH. A GPS was in the plane for the flight so we could track speed and altitude through out the flight

Thanks! I may have to go and look in to it.

Cool man, radar is …
Cool man, radar is cheap if you ever want to know just go to a good sporting goods store and rent a radar gun…

MIZUEZ @ 12:00 am

The calculated …
The calculated speed probably has some errors in its accuracy; however, i didn't buy the plane to measure how fast it flies. While it would be cool to get all the sensors and radar equipment, it might be a little to much money to do. to Make you happy 125 MPH is about 107 Kts

When did we start …
When did we start measuring airplane speed with MPH? If you want to calculate its airspeed you might want to ditch google maps and your handheld GPS and use radar or sensor poles. I don't think you're that far off, but I also know that plane wasn't doing 176' per second.

I am running on a …
I am running on a GMS 40, but also had a racing prop on at the time. I see what you mean about the drag though, but I still calculated 120 about three different times

I know garmins are …
I know garmins are reliable, and technically the airplane in a dive can reach that speed, keeping in mind that terminal velocity for a human body is 120 something, the airplane which is producing thrust could physically do it. Where i see the problem is that high wing trainer wings are mostly rubber banded on, if the drag doesnt rip the wing off, pulling out of the dive will. My question is what size engine are you running. A trainer is usually 40, if you have more, could explain things.

as this may be true …
as this may be true i many mays, i have used this same gps in a Boeing 737 crossing the country and had no false speed readings. !25 mph is also more believable than 500 and i went much higher that this altitude in other flights and hod no false readings. I believe that the speed reading it accurate. Using google earth, i mesured the distance across the parking lot and the time it took to cross it. The resulting calculation confirmed 120 mph

ViperThreat @ 12:00 am

i had a similar …
i had a similar situation with my gps unit, i was in a lancair at about 4500' agl, my airspeed was reading 240 knots, and with the opposing wind, i calculated to about 230, however the gps unit i had at the time was reading 500mph, which is nowhere near anything that aircraft is capable of. I found out later from the manufacturer that the unit was highly sensitive to extreme altitude changes, something about the sattelite position. your plane probably only made 80mph best.

MIZUEZ @ 12:00 am

The GPS did say …
The GPS did say 120mph with two confirmed points, however you are right with the high wind pushing the plane. on a windless day, the plane flies around 50-60 mph, but i also had a 10×7 race prop for this plight instead of my usual 11×6, so that might also have some effect on the speed

redneckin2010 @ 12:00 am

that is not even …
that is not even close to 125 mph: unless you are flying with a 50 mph wind behind you. I have the same plane and have an o.s. .46 with tuned piped and large carb. which was professionally tuned…flies at 71 mph!

agreed. Its like …
agreed. Its like the word "fun" is illegal now. I never herd of needing insurance for flying. I know clubs require it. "Might be why i never joined one." i just like the flying.

It's illegal to do …
It's illegal to do anything these days that involves any element of "Fun".Did you have your public liability certificate of insurance with you, covering you for a minimum of 6 million $'s?? Over here in the UK you need one if you fly on your own land!!Whole worlds gone nuts.

Excellent flight though,I knew that landing was going to be tricky as it seemed a bit windy in the vid, well done,Stew.
